CHILDREN PLAY WITH SKELETONS : FORGOTTEN ALBERTON CEMETERY
Situated at Alberton, midway be tween the Port road and the railway line to Adelaide, the Alberton Cemetery was the first burial ground established at
Port Adelaide. Though for many years it has been In an appalling state of neglect, in the last few months unthinking children have added a horrible touch
to what before was only pathetic neglect and untidiness. In the middle of the cemetery is a capacious vault erected, so blackened letters on a slate slab
above indicate, to the memory of John Snoswell and his wife Eliza. John Snoswell was buried there in 1878, but the weather has re moved the record of the exact year in which his wife was interred. The Snoswell vault stands on a slight knoll and is comparatively free from the prickly pear and boxthorn which cover many of the other graves. Perhaps because of this it has suffered worse in dignity than other graves in a cemetery of uncared for sepulchres. Bones as Playthings
Stark and black, a hole gapes in the red brickwork of the vault, which bears indications that it has been caused by human hands and not by the ravages of
time. Inside the vault neither hole has been made large enough to allow a person of small stature to slip down into the chamber in which for 50 years two coffins rested undisturbed. Inside the sepulchre two coffins can just be glimpsed, and strewn about the bottom and at the entrance are bones,
presumably taken by children from the coffins below. A workman in the nearby timber mill of Wadlow Limited corroborated this supposition. 'For some time now,' he said, 'kiddies have been in the habit of climbing in and out of the vault as if it was a pirate's cave, and the other day I saw one of them playing with a skull.
Tombs as Playhouses
Another part of the Cemetery affords un-mistakeable evidence that the burial ground is being used by the children of the neighborhood as a playground. Here and there among the horrible prickly pear and other spiky horrors of the vegetable kingdom a cypress pine tree rears itself over some forlorn looking
headstones. One of these trees, has been partly stripped of its brandies, which have been laid upon the top of the railings of two graves to form a neat but
entirely incongruous playhouse. Alberton cemetery is a graveyard of tears. Everywhere there are broken head stones, some crushed by careless feet into a thousand fragments, and some half buried in a tangle of undergrowth. Though it is difficult to trace the history of the burial ground from its head- stones
there is plenty of evidence to show that beneath its unkempt surface many of the pioneers of South Australia sleep. The inscription on one stone indicates that Grace Parsons, who died at Port Adelaide in 1845, sleeps beneath, and many of the other headstones show that per- sons who died in the fifties and sixties are buried below. Figure in Black Pathetic in its significance, one solitary grave stands out in Alberton Cemetery, bright, clean, and well-cared for. It
has no headstone to tell the passer-by the name of him or her who sleeps below, but a freshly whitewashed fence separates it from the surrounding
disorder, and inside there are fresh flowers. Twice a week a black-frocked woman visits this grave, and at the nearby timber mill they provide her with water to keep alive the flowers, which she has planted in memory of someone gone. It is said that her father and two sisters are buried in the grave which she tends so carefully. On Wednesday she paid one of her visits to the grave of her dead, and her slim, trim, figure, as it stepped gently over broken fragments of tomb, and moved aside to avoid the spiny thorns of' the gaunt, hungry looking cacti, accentuated the general desolateness of the burial ground.
Where Gamblers Met
In recent months the timber mill and yard of Wadlow Limited have sprung into existence on the northern end of Alberton Cemetery, and the Church of England rectory, once attached to the cemetery, is at present being used by the firm as an office. The mill of Wadlow Limited, however, has not been raised upon a portion of the old burial-ground, the nearest grave being at least 6 ft. away from the land now occupied by it. The coming of the mill if anything, has improved the cemetery. On the northern edge of the burial ground a huge timber shed has been erected, and to build this it was necessary to hack down a lot of the prickly pear, which had almost smothered the graves in the vicinity. When workman were removing this growth, preliminary to building the timber shed, they stumbled upon, and eventually destroyed, a haunt which for years had been used by men of the district as a gambling den. A narrow track through the prickly pear opened out into a fairly large space, and in this, with tombstones so close that the flying pennies sometimes fall near them, it was the custom, in other days for men to win and lose large sums of money. Now, though the cemetery still offers places where a large number of men could find concealment, the two-up players, if they gamble at all, do it elsewhere.
Significant Tomb 1927
There is one tomb in Alberton Cemetery which, besides being perhaps the strangest in any cemetery in the State, has a peculiar significance. Standing apart from the general confusion is a sort of shelter shed with a gigantic headstone inside it. The inscription on one side of this headstone, shows that it
was erected in 1898 by John Robert McDonald and Prudence McDonald his wife, and then follow 12 names, with dates of birth ranging from 1849 to 1874, and dates of death from 1851 to -1895. Names which appear on this strange headstone are: —
Frederick William Bell Socrates Robert John Prudence Jean Bell Virtue Socrates Fred Hope Lycurgus John Robert Beneath the names there is the line "All B. at Port Adelaide" but whether the letter B. stands for buried or born is not clear. Perhaps it may stand for both. Record of Family On the other side of the
McDonald headstone is another inscription, which though it may be common in other countries is unusual in South Australia. The inscription, which tells its
own tale of family pride felt by the old pioneering family, is as follows: —
Family Record John McDonald b. in Atholl, was at Culloden for Prince Charlie. John McDonald, shipowner, Perth;, b. in Atholl, 1749; d. 1839. John McDonald, master mariner; b. at Perth 1799; d. in Norway 1838. Jean Bell, his wife; d. at Ayr, 1822. John Robert McDonald; b, at Ayr 1822; d. 1909. Married by Dean Farrell, T.C., Adelaide, 1848 to Prudence Brown; b. at Nailsea, 1829 The strangest thing, however, about this strangest of strange tombs, is that the headstone in addition to having a roof above it to protect it from the weather, is surrounded by stout iron bars, prison like in their strength, just as if John McDonald and his good wife Prudence knew when they built it 30 years ago what was to happen to the McDonald and other pioneer graves of Alberton Cemetery in the years to come.
11 Jun 1927 Exhumation Suggested
Alberton Cemetery is owned and controlled by St. Paul's Church of England, Port Adelaide. It was the first burial ground for Port Adelaide, and its establishment dates back so far that only the scrappiest of records are retained by the church. Apart from a few plans, which are not at all clear, little is known as to how the land was acquired, and there is no complete record of burials. Though an occasional burial still takes place in the cemetery, holders of land exercising the right to inter relatives there, the place has been closed as a public burial place for years. Some time ago a suggestion was made that the bodies of those persons buried in Alberton Cemetery should be exhumed and removed to Cheltenham Cemetery nearby, but nothing was done.

STORIES FROM GOD'S ACRE
Duke Attends Funeral
SEXTON'S TREASURE TROVE
Probably the only funeral ever at tended by Royalty in Australia was that of a sailor who was interred in the old Alberton Cemetery, now overgrown with
weeds and the playground of children, as narrated in 'The Mail' recently. In 1867 a sailor of H M S Galatea died at Port Adelaide. The Duke of Edinburgh, second son of the late Queen Victoria, and grand uncle to the present Duke and Duchess of York, was in command of the vessel, in which he visited
the various States of Australia. The sailor was given a naval funeral. Together with the ship's company, the Duke of Edinburgh marched from Port
Adelaide to the cemetery.
Another interesting burial, which took place many years ago in the same cemetery, was that of the wife of a ship's captain. She died on the voyage to Port
Adelaide. As she had expressed a wish to be buried ashore, if possible, the captain broached, cargo for a quantity of spirits of wine and used it to preserve
the body of his wife until Port Adelaide was reached. Her body was then placed at rest beneath the peaceful earth instead of the stormy waves.
Whilst working in that cemetery a sexton one day dug up a bundle of bank notes. He handed them over to an Anglican clergyman, who endeavored to
find the owner of the money. What the minister actually did with the money remained unknown for about 20 years.
A new manager was appointed to one of the banks at Port Adelaide, and in over hauling the contents of one of the bank vaults he came upon a bundle of bank notes. The outer notes crumbled and decayed at the touch of his fingers, but many were still in good order. There was no record as to the ownership of the notes at the bank, which were all in the currency of private banks. The manager showed the notes to the bank's oldest customer, who had one time been mayor of Port Adelaide. He recognised the lost money as that found by the sexton. The bank- divided the money among the descendants of the sexton

Council Asked To Control Alberton Cemetery
As the outcome of a meeting held in the Council Chambers of the Port Adelaide Town Hall yesterday afternoon, the Port Adelaide City Council will be
asked to take over the control and maintenance of the old Alberton Cemetery, which was the subject of severe criticism at the last meeting of the Council.
Yesterday the committee appointed in 1931 to direct the maintenance of the Cemetery conferred with members of the Council. Archdeacon Houison,
a member of the directing committee said that the Church of England did not wish to repudiate its liability, but it did not assume the full responsibility for the cemetery, which was given In 1847 to the people of Port Adelaide. The Church of England was asked to control it for the reason, he believed, that there was no other body in Port Adelaide which could take control of it. The municipality was not incorporated until 1856 The Mayor of Port Adelaide (Mr. H.W. Bray), said that he had inspected the cemetery, and wished to congratulate the voluntary committee for the work which had been done towards its
renovation. Praise should also be given to Mr. F. Norden for all he had done for the cemetery. In the past four years he had kept the place in good order, and had planted a number of trees, shrubs and flowers. Councillor H. Guthrie said that he looked upon the cemetery as historic of Port Adelaide: it should be maintained in honor of the pioneers of the State. Archdeacon Houlson stated that If the council assumed control, the trustees would pay to it £100, which was being held in trust on account of the cemetery. Councillor A. J. W. Lewis moved that the Port Adelaide City Engineer (Mr. W. W. Tapp), should be asked to inspect the cemetery and submit an estimate of the cost of putting it in good order, and another estimate of the annual upkeep; and that the Port Adelaide City Council should be asked to consider taking over control of the cemetery. The resolution was carried. The meeting placed on record the services rendered by Archdeacon Houison, the former Mayor of Port Adelaide (Cr. A. J. W. Lewis), and Mr. P. Norden. for the work they had done in maintaining the cemetery.

Port Council To Control
Alberton Cemetery
The Port Adelaide City Council last night decided to assume control of the Alberton Cemetery. The church authorities which have had control of the
cemetery since the early days of Port Adelaide, had previously informed the council that they were prepared to hand over to the council a Real Property Act title to the cemetery and the sum of £100. The authorities also undertook to comply with all other conditions. In future the whole of the maintenance
of the cemetery, in which many of the pioneers of the State are buried, will be the responsibility of the city council. The city engineer (Mr. W. W. Tapp)
has been instructed to proceed immediately with the task of cleaning up the cemetery. The delapidated condition of which has been the subject of
complaints for many years.

The respect and esteem in which the late Captain John Bickers was held by all sections of the community were strikingly shown on Tuesday afternoon when his remains were laid in their last resting-place in the old Alberton Cemetery. It could be truthfully said that the Captain had in his time played as many parts if not more than fall to the lot of the ordinary seafaring man, and those who had directly or indirectly benefitted by his benevolence were not slow to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of a gentleman who as was remarked at the grave, was 'one of the best friends Port Adelaide ever had.'
The cortege, which was long, left the late gentleman's residence, Camilla House, South Esplanade, Semaphore, at 3 o'clock, and wound its way to the Port Adelaide Congregational Church, so many years attended by the Captain. The building was well filled by a representative gathering, and an impressive service was conducted by the Pastor, Rev. J. C. Kirby, and the Rev. A. C. Sutherland. M.A., B.D., a brother Scot with the deceased gentleman. The choir, under Mr. J. W. Channon, Organist of the Church, led the singing. As the coffin was borne out of the Church the 'Dead March' was played. The procession then reformed, and made its way to the Alberton Cemetery, the deceased being buried alongside his wife, who died a few years ago. The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. J. C. Kirby, and the whole proceedings were suggestive of the last hours of the dead mariner; there was for him 'no
moaning at the bar when he put out to sea.' The gathering at the cemetery was most representative. In addition to those who could claim many years of friendship with the Captain, there were present members of bodies with which he had at one time and another been associated, besides prominent townsmen and other gentlemen of almost every walk of life. The chief mourners were: — Mr. and Mrs. T. Bickers, Mr. and Mrs. George Abernathy, and Messrs. W. and J. B. Blair. The pallbearers were the following members of the Congregational Church :-Messrs. G. P. Hodge. V. Y. and Z. H. Jones. T. Matthew, W. Warren, and T. Todd. Nearly all the officers and deacons of the Church were present. Among the many others around the grave were the President ( Mr. T. N. Stephens). Wardens, and officers of tho Marine Board, of which body the late Captain Bickers was as one time a member ; Mr. H. W. Cammell. Comptroller of Accounts, and officers of H.M. Customs; the Mayor, Mr. C. R. Morris; Councillors and officers of the Port Adelaide and Semaphore Corporations, and surround ing District Councils: Mr. W. Johnstone, S.M., representing the Port Adelaide Bench, and others of the Port Court; Mr. F.R. Burton, Clerk of the Adelaide Local Court; Sub-Inspector Doyle, for the Police Department; Captain Lee, Secretary of the Port Adelaide Sailors' Home; the
Port Adelaide pilots in a body; the Secretary of tho Chamber of Manufacture, Mr. W. Clark ; Messrs. J. Darling, M.P., D. Bower, H. C. Fletcher, H.W. Thompson, M. Salom, J. Stone. Captains H.W. Harris and Osborne, and the head of almost every shipping and agency firm in the Port, besides a large number of tradespeople. Among the apologies for absence were those from the Naval Commandant, Captain Creswell, R.N., C.M.G., the Rev. J. Robertson, M. A., and Mr. J. Picker iug, Comptroller of Accounts of the S. A. Railways. Customs officers prevented by public duty from being present likewise sent apologies.

The late Mr. Richard Blackler, who died at the Adelaide Hospital on Tuesday after years of illness, takes another name from the roll of colonists who arrived before 1840. In 1839, Mr R. Blackler, with his parents and his brothers - the late Messrs. William and John Blackler—arrived in South Australia by the ship Caroline. He went with the rest of the family to the Victorian diggings, and subsequently took the Port Admiral Hotel, at Port Adelaide, which he held for some time. During the last few years he has led a retired life. Mr. Blackler was 69 years of age, and will doubtless be well remembered by the older
colonists. The only member of his father's family now living is a sister (Mrs. Ford, of Ford's Hotel, Port Adelaide), although Mr Blackler has a married daughter living in Melbourne. His remains were interred in the Alberton Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.

BOWEN, William
Adelaide Observer Saturday 14 May 1864 page 8
CORONER'S INQUEST—On Saturday Dr. Woodforde held, an inquest at the Semaphore Hotel touching the death of Mr. William Bowen, who fell from his horse on the previous evening, and received such severe injuries that he died in a few hours. A Jury of 13 having been sworn, they selected Mr. Emes as foreman, and after viewing the body, the evidence of Mr. Peter Smith and Dr. Gething was taken, from which it appeared the deceased had partaken of tea at the hotel, after which he mounted his horse and rode slowly down the plank road, having his step-daughter, a child about nine years of age, on the saddle before him; but a few moments elapsed before the screams of the little girl arrested attention, and on proceeding to the spot Mr. Bowen was found lying on the ground quite insensible. He was removed to the Semaphore, and a messenger dispatched for surgical assistance, which arrived in due course;
but the injuries sustained were of such a nature that he lingered till 3 o'clock on Saturday morning, when he expired. The tender age of the child prevented her evidence being taken, but being a remarkably intelligent creature her version of the unfortunate accident was a most lucid one. She stated that after starting, her father attempted to alter her position, and in doing so relinquished the reins, when the horse suddenly started, causing him to fall, and being encumbered with her weight the concussion was the more violent. Dr. Gething .described the injuries received, and without hesitation a verdict of accidental death was recorded. The deceased was known as a very civil and obliging person. At the time of the accident he was riding a horse which had been his own for a long period, during which he attended to the Port mails—a duty which he had recently resigned when taking possession of the Lefevre's Hotel. He was but 26 years of age, and leaves a widow and two stepchildren. The funeral, on Sunday after, noon, was numerously attended by the inhabitants of the surrounding neighbourhood, who, with a large number of Oddfellows, followed the hearse to the Alberton Cemetery.

The Late Mrs. H. Duncan.— nearly every vessel in Port Adelaide harbour dropped its colours to half-mast in memory of Mrs. Duncan, the esteemed wife of the respected Health Officer. It would be impossible to find another gentleman in the Port more popular than the worthy doctor, and the loss of his wife became in a measure quite a public affair, every class sympathizing in his bereavement In accordance with a wish expressed during the illness of the deceased lady, the funeral was conducted at the Alberton Cemetery on Wednesday evening, when notwithstanding the hour at which it took place, between 7 and S . o'clock, there was a considerable number of sympathizing friends present The mourning coach conveyed the respected Doctor, Captain
Servante, K.N. (father of Mrs. Duncan), Musses Servante (2), and Messrs. Servaute (2), Captain Dashwood, and Mr. G. W. Hawkes. Several private carriages followed, and at the grave we noticed Captain Douglas, Drs. Gething, Todman, and Forwood, Messrs. O'Halloran. Edmunds,
Downer, Parker, J. Smith, and many other gentle men desirous of expressing their deep sympathy with the deceased. The Rev. S. Green officiated
at the grave.

DUNCAN, Dr. Handasyde
The South Australian Advertiser Saturday 23 March 1878 page 15
We regret to have to chronicle this month the death of Dr. Duncan, who has for many years held the position of Health and Immigration Officer at Port Adelaide. The deceased gentleman was a great favorite at Port Adelaide, where he had resided almost from its earliest days. While in the practice of his profession his kindness was a byword, and his skill commanded admiration on all hands. At first he had an extensive practice, but in time when the duties of his position in the Government service increased he dropped many of his patients, and finally almost relinquished visiting. He was a man of large mind and dear perception, and quite equal to the onerous duties of his position. During his period of service the visitations of sickness to the colony were very few, but when required the Doctor by his firm promptitude showed how capable he was to meet an emergency. But a short time back the Quarantine Laws were brought into force, and some amount of censure on his action was at times implied, but the result proved the Doctor to have been right in the measures he adopted. From the time of the arrival of the emigrant ship British Enterprise he evidently failed in his bodily health, although his mental powers seldom lost their vivacity. But he himself knew quite well how near the great change was at hand, and was prepared accordingly. On Sunday morning he passed away, and in the afternoon a post-mortem was held, in strict accordance with his desire. One of his last wishes was to buried at midnight without the least show, pomp, or ceremony such as is usually witnessed. He leaves two daughters and a son, the latter being a lieutenant in Her Majesty's Navy. The mortal remains of Dr. Duncan were taken to their last resting-place at the Alberton Cemetery, on Monday evening, February 25. There was a moderate attendance at the funeral, but it would have been considerably larger had it not been announced that the proceedings would be private. The cortege left the deceased gentleman's late residence at about 20 minutes past 6 o'clock in the evening, and proceeded to St. Paul's Church, where a portion of the service for the dead was read by the Rev. S. Green. The remains were interred shortly after dusk in the Alberton Cemetery. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. J. C. & G. E. Haddy, of Port Adelaide. In compliance with the wish of the deceased, the coffin was devoid of
ornamentation, and the hearse was plain. Among those present at the church and at the grave were the two daughters of the deceased, Mrs. Servante, Messrs. F. and J. Servante, Mr. G. W. Hawkes, S.M., Archdeacon Marryat, Dean Russell, Canon Farr, Drs. Paterson, Phillips, Moore, Gething, Toll, Forwood, and Worthington. Captain Ferguson (President of the Marine Board), Mr. G. B. Scott, S.M., Messrs. T. J. King, Howell, J. Cleave, H. H. Thomas,
A. Jones, and H.B Surge (Wardens of St. Paul's Church, who acted as bearers), Messrs. J. Henderson, J.P., H. D. O'Halloran, Duffield, C. H. T . Connor, H. C. Fletcher, H. D. Cruttenden, W. R. Cave, J. Neill, J.P., George Young, Jas. Mitchell, R. Jagoe, Geo. W. Smith, J. Smith, H. C. E. Muecke, J.P., — Sillifant, Captains Begg, Legoe. Drew, Wells, and Boord, Councillor Rann, Messrs. Cosh, and C. Downer.

Death of Dr. Duncan.—It is with regret that we have to record the death of Dr Handasyde Duncan, of Port Adelaide, who expired at 20 minutes past 8 on Sunday morning, February 24. The lamented doctor, who a short time since obtained a twelvemonth's leave of absence as Health Officer and Immigration Agent after nearly 30 years' service, succumbed to exhaustion and heart disease in his 67 th year, he having been born in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 13, 1811. Dr. Duncan was one of those earnest workers who are loth to retire from active service until an enfeebled health compels them,
and it is perhaps owing to this fact that he was not spared to see a riper age. During his last illness he agreed with his medical friend that he should have sought rest earlier, as latterly he had had much anxiety as Health Officer in connection with the quarantined ship British Enterprise. Handasyde Duncan studied at Glasgow, Paris, and Germany, and consequently had a very extended medical education. He obtained his M.D. degree at Glasgow in 1831, was made M.R.C.P., Edinburgh, in 1863, F.F.P.S., Glasgow, in 1836, and L.R..C.S., Edinburgh, in 1829, and member of the Medical Board of South Australia
in 1845. In 1849 he was appointed Health Officer to the colony. He arrived in South Australia by the ship Katherine Stuart Forbes in 1839, and settled at the Sturt until 1849, when he succeeded the late Captain Butler as Immigration Agent at Port Adelaide. He has been for some years a widower, and leaves behind him a son, who is a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, and two daughters. During his long residence at the Port he secured the highest possible respect as a gentleman of noble character. His kindness and courtesy won for him a good name, and his diffidence was a virtue that public men might well emulate. The funeral took place on Monday night, February 25, and was conducted as nearly as possible in accordance with his wishes. He wished to be buried at night, and he was interred just after sunset. No one was invited to be present because it was his especial desire that there should not be any
form—not even his daughters were to put on mourning; and they attended dressed in white. The remains left his late residence about 6 o'clock, and were conveyed to the Port Anglican Church, where the Rev. S. Green read the burial service. The cortege, at the head of which Mr. Green walked, then proceeded to the Alberton Cemetery, and the interment took place in the presence of numerous personal friends of the deceased. Among those assembled were Dean Russell, Archdeacon Marryat, Canon Farr, Drs. Moore, Gething, Toll, Worthington, Phillips, and Forwood, Messrs. Jno. Smith and G. Young two fellow passengers with Dr. Dnncan to the colony), G. B. Scott, S.M., and G. W. Hawkes, S.M., Captains Ferguson, Boord, Wells, Drew, Legoe, and Begg,
and Messrs. Fletcher, Casey, O'Halloran, Servanto, Muecke, King, Cleve, Neill, Hack, Melville, Connor, Thomas, Downer, and many others. The Government were represented by Dr. Paterson (the Colonial Surgeon) and Mr. Duffield as the representative of Mr. H. J. Andrews, of the Immigration Department. In the first mourning coach were the deceased's two daughters, the executors, and Dr. B. Gething.

JAMIESON, Alexander
South Australian Register Saturday 15 August 1868 page 6
Captain Jamieson. -The vessels in harbour on August 3 wore their colours half masted in token that a very old and respected shipmaster had 'gone aloft.' A very general feeling of regret was evinced at his death, for although it had fallen to his lot to reach the 81st year, he looked as if another 10 would scarcely have altered him. A few days past, in pursuing his avocation as marine surveyor, he was embarking from the Government steps when a rope across the gangway caused him to stumble and fall into a boat, thereby breaking his collar-bone and otherwise bruising him. At first it was hoped he would get over the effects but subsequently they became more serious and ended fatally on Sunday morning, August. For about 16 years his well-known features have been familiar to frequenters of the Port, and his long experience as a shipmaster caused him to be sought as authority in nautical matters. He had
been thrice married, and but a short time before his death rejoiced in the birth of his 21st child, the eldest being then quite 60 years of age. He has left a large progeny, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, numbering over 70. He had many friends and few enemies. He had excellent health, and usually walked to the Port till the day he met with the accident which hastened his death. Captain Alexander Jamieson was born in Aberdeenshire m 1788, took his first command in 1808, and for 45 years commanded vessels to nearly every part of the world — East and West Indies, China, and America,
as well as the colonies. He brought out many thousands of passengers to Hobart Town, Sydney, and Melbourne. His first voyage to this port was in 1837, in the ship Trusty : and what is very uncommon, during his whole voyaging he never was wrecked, scarcely ever losing a spar. He settled in South Australia with his family shortly after. His remains were conveyed to their last resting-place on August 5. The funeral was very largely attended, and amongst those present we observed many of the most influential persons connected with the shipping interest. Twenty-one vehicles followed the hearse to the Alberton Cemetery, when the Rev. M. H. Hodge officiated and delivered an impressive address.

The Late Captain Mackay. —Captain Mackay died at the Portland Estate on Saturday, Sept 30, from a cancer, which has caused him a painful illness of nine months. He first traded to Port Adelaide about 30 years ago. and continued to bring coasters there until within the last eight years, when he retired from active life. Since then he has resided at Portland Estate, of the District Council of which he was at one time a member. His death will be regretted in the Port and its suburbs, where he had made many friends by his straightforward and consistent life. He leaves a widow in delicate health, and four children, whom, we understand, are provided for. Captain Mackay was buried in Alberton Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, October 8. Between 50 and 60 gentlemen walked with the relatives of the deceased behind the hearse, who were followed by three mourning coaches and 15 private vehicles. A large crowd met the mourners at the cemetery, where the Revs. P. Maclaren and J. Henderson read the funeral service. Among those who stood around the
grave were Mr. Bower, J.P., M.P., Captains J. H. Ferguson, J.P., Bickers, J.P., J. MvLeod, and M. Brown, Messrs. Dempster, T. J. King, G. and T. Sinclair, J. Neil, W. H. Thompson, and Councillor Honey. The flags of the ships in the Pert were hoisted half-mast in respect for the deceased.
MALCOLM, James
The South Australian Advertiser Monday 27 November 1865 page 5
The funeral of Captain James Malcolm, of the Ship Pekina, who died on Saturday morning, at Ford's Hotel, took place on Sunday afternoon, at the Alberton Cemetery. His remains were followed to the grave by the vessel's crew, and a very large number of friends, all the ships in harbor having their flags half-mast high in token of respect. The deceased was an old and much-esteemed colonist, having arrived here in the brig Malcolm, his own property, in 1846. He returned to Europe shortly afterwards, and came out again as passenger, and for many years represented the bouse of Elder, Stirling, A Co., (now Elder, Smith and Co.) at Port Adelaide. In 1862 he left for Wallaroo, and was for some time manager of the wharves and tramways there. In the early part of 1861, he proceeded to England, and superintended the building of the Pekina, and arrived here in command of that vessel some three weeks past in a precarious state of health. He leaves a wife and two children residing in the neighborhood of Liverpool to mourn their loss.

DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.— Mr. Israel Mazey, one of the now few remaining old colonists who died at his residence, King Street, Alberton on Tuesday, 26 inst., was born between the years 1811 and 1814 in the village of Abbington, Berkshire, England. The exact date of birth cannot at present be
determined owing to the certificate of birth being lost. Leaving England as an ordinary seaman on board the "Duke of York" he arrived in Nepean Bay, Kangaroo Island, on July 27th, 1836, now 58 years ago. While there a number of the party of whom Mr. Mazey was one went inland and for three
days they were lost in the scrub. On leaving Kangaroo Island they sailed for Hobart, Tasmania, where Mr. Mazey left the ship and stayed only a few weeks, finding his way back to the island. He remained working as a blacksmith for the South Australian Company for about three years, and finally growing weary of life on the island he and the late Pilot Germein, accompanied by three others, determined to make for the main land. They started and safely landed at the Old Port in an open boat. Finding his way to Bowden Mr. Mazey lived there for a while, but returning to Alberton he became married, and finally settled down at that locality, where he has since lived continuously until the time of his death, with the exception of a short visit to the Victorian gold fields, and a brief period of farming at Blumberg. In the early days he followed the occupation of lighterman, but subsequently took up the calling of a
fisherman at which he continued until the death of his wife which happened in June 1878, now sixteen years ago. Since then he had been living a retired life for some time with a married daughter, Mrs. W. Hone, but the last few years with Mrs. Betty. He had a family of seven sons and five daughters.
Six sons and five daughters are living, all being married with the exception of one son. He leaves forty-five grand-children and nine
great grand-children. The remains were interred in the Alberton Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.

On Saturday morning, May 19, Mr. George McKay died at the advanced age of 82 years, forty-five of which had been spent in Port Adelaide. The genial Scotch face and wiry frame of the deceased gentleman were well known to Portonians both old and young, he being the oldest resident next to Capt. Quinn. He had in his long seafaring career weathered many a storm, and few mariners were better acquainted with the Australian coast. Though of unassuming manners he had made many friends at the Port by his kindly disposition, sterling honesty, and true Christian character. His activity, considering his advanced age, was extraordinary, and no one who saw the old gentleman digging in his little garden a fortnight since would have thought that he would so soon have joined the great majority. His remains were interred on Sunday last in the Alberton cemetery, when a large number of Portonians followed to pay their last tribute of respect, amongst them being Capt Griffith McKay and Mr. Geo. McKay (sons), Mr. Braddock (son in-law), Messrs. H. W. Thompson (late mayor of the Port), A. Quinn, J. H. Hannay, W. Hamlyn, T. Mitchelmore, Jas. Murray, T. Eve, Fergusson, Cairo, Captains J. Yeo, Jenkins, and Allen and many other prominent Portonians. The burial service was conducted by Rev. J. C Kirby, Congregational minister, in an impressive manner. The deceased gentleman leaves a large number of sons and daughters and grandchildren, most of whom reside in the colony.

MICHELMORE, Thomas
Port Adelaide News and Lefevre's Peninsula Advertiser Friday 06 November 1891 page 3
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Thomas Michelmore, an old Portonian, who died in his 65th year at the Adelaide Hospital late on Sunday night. The late Mr. Michelmore was a native of Somersetshire, England, his father being a farmer. He was brought up amongst pastoral and rural scenes tor the
first 15 or 16 years of his life, and his parents being members of the Congregational Church - he was consequently brought up under the teachings and doctrines of the same. Not being enamoured with the charms of country life he obtained the sanction of his parents, and sailing for Canada, he settled down at Quebec, and learnt the trade of sailmaking. After about 7 years he joined the Independent Church, under the pastorate of a Mr. Drummond, returning to his country home in Somersetshire for a holiday, and finally decided to sail for South Australia, arriving at Port Adelaide in September, 1849. The Rev. M. H. Hodge, who founded the Congressional Church at Port Adelaide about October, 1849, included in his first small list of members Mr. Michelmore, and from that time to within the last few years (when sickness prevented him) he has occupied various offices in the Church—as teacher
and Superintendent of sunday-school, deacon sick visitor, &c. He was a member of the Fort Congregational Church for 42 years.
Soon after his arrival in Port Adelaide he entered the employ of Capt. French as a sailmaker at Port Adelaide. Subsequently he started business for himself as sailmaker and ship chandler in the premises now occupied by Mr. C. Hains, auctioneer, in Commercial- road, Port. Owing to business depression
Mr. Michelmore closed his establishment and began business as a shipping agent, at which he was working until the time of his death. The funeral of the deceased took place on Tuesday afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Alberton cemetery. Service was first held in the Congregational Church,
concducted by the Rev. J. Robertson, M.A, - of Stow Church, the local church choir also assisting ; and at the grave the Oddfellows' M.U. funeral service was read by Mr. J. Counsell.
MILLARD, John
The Express and Telegraph Saturday 20 November 1886 page 2
Mr. Jonn Millard, the well-known and much respected master of the Lefevre's Peninsula Model School, died at his residence, Semaphore-road, on Friday evening. For a few months previously he had been suffering from consumption, and so precarious had his condition become that his friends were gravely apprehensive. His death was therefore not quite unexpected. Unassuming in disposition and obliging to all with whom be came in contact, the deceased
gentlemen had gathered a large circle of friends, and the news of his death will be received with profound regret at the Semaphore and Port Adelaide, where his merits were well known. It is over thirty years since Mr. Millard settled in Lefevre's Peninsula, and soon after his arrival he started a day school
in the district, using for the purpose" a somewhat primitive building not a great distance from the present public school, He had a partner at the time, but finding that the funds accruing from the school were not sufficient for their support that gentle retired, and Mr. Millard was left in sole charge. With the growing population school requirements were increased, and some years afterwards the public building was erected, and Mr. Millard was appointed
master. He manifested great interest in municipal matters, ..took a leading part in the formation of the Semaphore Corporation and the establishment of
the local institute, and officiated as chairman of the trustees of the Loyal Peninsula Lodge. He was a widower, 64 years of age, his wife having died a few years ago, and he leaves a son and three daughters. His remains will be interred in the Alberton Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, and the scholars will follow the hearse.
Adelaide Observer Saturday 27 November 1886 page 33
We record the death of Mr. John Millard at his residence. Semaphore-road, late on Friday, Nov, 19. The cause was consumption, from which Mr. Millard had been suffering since last July. The deceased gentleman came to the colony early in the fifties, and settled on Lefevre's Peninsula about thirty-three years ago. At that time there was a small school on the Peninsula, but the teaching was very unsatisfactory. Boon after Mr. Millard's arrival several residents invited him with a friend of his to stay and open a school. They gave him for the purpose the use of a two-story brick building near Fletcher's
Dry Dock. They started the school, but after a time finding that it would not support both masters one of them retired, and Mr. Millard was left to carry on the duty alone. With the increased population the number of scholars also increased, and the residents decided to build a proper schoolroom. About
ten years ago the new building was taken over and added to by the Council of Education, and Mr. Millard was appointed Head Teacher of the Lefevre's Peninsula Public School, a position which he held at the time of his death. Mr. Millard, who enjoyed the respect and esteem of the residents of Lefevre's Peninsula, took considerable interest in public matters, especially those pertaining to the District Council. He was prominently engaged in the formation of the Semaphore Corporation and in the establishment of the first Institute n that municipality. He was also Chairman of the trustees of the local Lodge. The
deceased leaves one son and three daughters. Mrs. Millard died about four years ago, and a daughter two years earlier. The remains of the late Mr. John Millard, the pioneer schoolmaster on Lefevre's Peninsula, were interred in the Alberton Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large and representative gathering of residents of the district, in whose estimation the deceased gentleman had ranked high. A touching feature of the event was the large assemblage of past and present scholars of the Lefevres Peninsula School. That was considered a strong tribute, especially on the
part of the present scholars, as they had not met together since the announcement of Mr. Millard's death to receive any instructions as to the funeral. As the cortege left the deceased's late residence at Exeter the school children, boys and girls, numbering nearly 200, a large proportion of whom carried
wreaths or bouquets, marched at the head of the procession in charge of Mr. Fowler, the acting Head Master, and a number of teachers. Then followed a large number of the old scholars, also walking. The hearse came next, followed by coaches containing the immediate relatives of the deceased, and
a long line of vehicles contained leading residents of the district. These included Messrs. D, Bower, M.P., H. W. Thompson, J. Cleave, George Willimott, and K. Lindsay, representing the local School Board of Advice. There were also present a number of officials of the Order of Oddfellows, the deceased having been identified for many years with the Loyal Peninsula Lodge, M.U. Drs. Mitchell, Mackintosh, and Curtis also attended, and also the leading members of the Wesleyan denomination resident in the district. On arriving at the cemetery gates the past and present scholars formed double lines,
through which the remainder of the procession passed to the grave. The funeral service was read by the Rev. W, H. Rofe, and the other ministers present were the Revs. J. Bicktord and P. C. Thomas. At the request of friends the Rev. Mr. Bickford save a short address at the grave, in which he extolled the virtues of the deceased in eloquent words, praising his long and useful career, and closing with a suitable exhortation. The coffin was borne from the hearse to the grave by Messrs. W. Russell, R. Woolnongh, jun., W. Fletcher, and J. Sidoli. all old scholars. The ritual of the Order of Oddfellows was read by Brother Bray, the N.G. of the Loyal Peninsula Lodge.

A Pioneering Family
MRS. E. PEAKE, of 17 Boundary road, Glenelg, says she was very interested in Mr. Thomas Neill's note about the old sappers and miners. 'My grandfather, the late Sergeant Joseph Andrew Moore, arrived in South Australia in the ship Frances Peate with the second detachment of sappers and miners that came out to assist in the survey of the colony,' she writes. 'My grandparents lived for many years at the rear of the viceregal domain, where a large family were born. The late Mrs. W. H. Tite (of Goode, Durrant & Tite) was the eldest, and one son, Mr. J. A. Moore, drew the chain to Mount Gambier, William Trivess Moore was a mounted trooper, and once, during a trip to Melbourne the Kelly brothers were waiting for my uncle, whom they knew was carrying 800 sovereigns on him. The late Mr. R, T. Moore, of Ferry, Moore and Wilkinson, was also a son; my father, the late H. J. Moore, was the youngest, and the late Mrs. J. A, Ellery, who died recently, was a sister. There are two remaining members of this early pioneering family, Miss M. A.
Moore and Miss L. E. Moore, both of Glenelg. My grandfather was also stationed at H.M. Customs, Port Adelaide, during the visit of the Duke of

He, however, rapidly sank, but was perfectly conscious until a few moments before his death. Mr. Newman was one of our earliest colonists, having arrived by the Canton in 1838,
and had been in business at the Port since its establishment Directly the information was received the vessels in harbour lowered then flags to half-mast The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, July 3, and was numerously attended. The cortege left the Brocas, Woodville, about 3 o'clock. In addition to the two mourning coaches, which were occupied by members of the deceased's family and Mr. H. C E. Muecke, his partner, and others, there were 47 private vehicles occupied by residents in the city, the Port, and other parts of the colony, most of whom had known Mr. Newman for many years. The procession stopped at Woodville Church, where the Rev. James Pollitt conducted the burial service. The cortege then proceeded to the Alberton Cemetery, where, at the request of the deceased, the executors had selected ground close where the remains of the late Messrs. W. James and C C. Collinson, two of his oldest friends, were interred. At the grave the Rev. J. Pollitt, assisted by the Rev. S. Green, officiated. At the ceremony there
were noticed Dr. Peel, Dr. Gething, Captain R. H. Ferguson. Captain Ward, Dr. Schomburgk, Messrs. A. Hall, J. M. Sinclair, J. W. Lewis, J. Formfey, Scott, W. J. Crawford, H. F. Shipster, F. J. Sanderson, J. H. Parr, Botting, Anthony, Walters, J. P. Stow, R. Edmunds, Hawthorn, C. L. Meyer, M. L. Conner, J. C. Hawker, Dempster, J. C. Ferguson, S. Osborne, and many other business men and private persons. As a mark of respect to the deceased gentle man, the Poiionian published a very clever memorial cartoon, which many who remember the late Mr. John Newman, either as a man of business or pleasure, may be inclined to preserve. A few copies for framing are obtainable at tbe publishers' (Messrs. Frearson and Brother) uncreased, and mounted upon toned paper.
Referring to this cartoon we may say that it is one of the best among the many good which have emanated from the pencil of ' Cerberus,' who is never more in his element than when among dogs and horses. Mr. Newman was understood to hail originally from Eton, and therefore above his head the artist has thrown the College banner, bearing the device ' Floreat Etona,' and the sportsman, gun in hand,, is surrounded by noble dogs of various breeds.
Below them, tastefully scattered, lies the making of a splendid bag of game, while stirrups, hunting-whip, and spare guns complete the centrla picture, which is bordered by palm branches, and surmounted on each side by a weeping archeress. Several spirited vignettes illustrate sport upon land, in the air, and on the water, forming a suitable surrounding to the memorial portrait of one whose name was ever associated with hunt, match, or regatta.

The remains of the late John F. Parsons, a colonist of 46 years, who died at Alberton on Monday night, will be interred in the Alberton Cemetery this afternoon. Mr. Parsons arrived in the colony in the ship Coromandel in January, 1837. He was a sailor on the vessel, but preferred remaining on shore to
going to sea again. Shortly after his arrival he procured a situation as storekeeper for the Government at Holdfast Bay, which position he retained until May, 1839, when he bought a boat from the master of the Katherine Stewart Forbes, and started business on his own account at Glenelg as communicator between ships at anchor and the shore. He also procured the mail con tract and for some time carried the mails on foot to Adelaide from Glenelg. Afterwards he shifted to Port Adelaide (the old port) where he found employment amongst the shipping. Settling at Alberton, he acquired land and built the Coromandel Hotel, which he conducted for some years. In 1852 he made two successful trips to the Victorian goldfields, and two or three years afterwards went on a visit to England. Since his return he has lived in quiet retirement near the scene of his early labors, being generally much respected. He leaves a wife and large family, besides a number of grandchildren. It might he mentioned that Mr. Parsons accompanied Captain Lipson down the Port
River in February, 1839. to make the first cutting in the outer bar with the spoon barge built,by the Government, and this cutting was for some time afterwards known as "Parsons' cutting."

SUDDEN DEATH AT CAPE WILLOUGHBY LIGHT HOUSE.— Information has been received by the Marine Board of the sudden death of Mr. J. Tapley,
one of the keepers of the Sturt Lighthouse, Cape Willoughby. It is stated that he appeared in perfect health when he took his watch at about 3 o'clock on Saturday morning, 23rd instant; but soon after daylight his servant taking him some coffee, discovered him lying dead on the floor of the lantern. From the fact ot the lights having been turned off, the blinds drawn down, and everything in readiness for cleaning and trimming the lamps, it in evident he could
not have been dead more than an hour. The Government survey schooner Beatrice being in the neighbourhood was signalled, and Captain Hutchison conveyed the body of the deceased to the Port. The deceased is brother to Mr. Richard Tapley, of Port Adelaide. The vessels in Port wore their colours half-mast during the morning. The funeral took place at the Alberton Cemetery on Monday afternoon. The President and Secretary of the Marine Board, the Harbour Master, and a large number of friends followed.

WILLS, John Nathaniel
The South Australian Register Thursday 27 March 1873 page 7
Mr. John N. Wills.— In our obituary will be found a notice of the death of Mr. John N. Wills, of H.M. Customs. This took place on the 14th instant after a lingering and painful illness. Mr. Wills, who was 61 years of age, was a very old colonist, having settled here in 1836, since which time he has been a resident in the vicinity of Port Adelaide, and for the past 30 years he has held office in the Customs Service. A few months since he obtained leave of absence in order to recruit his health by a trip to Newcastle and back ; but shortly after leaving he became so much worse that he was compelled to return home by steamer from Melbourne, and has since then been confined to his room. The deceased was much respected, and at one time, whilst residing at Queenstown, took an active interest in the formation and working of the District Council in that locality. Within the past 12 months he was chosen Chairman of the first Council of the recently-formed District of Lefevre's Peninsula — an office which failing health compelled him to resign. He has also held high office in Freemasonry, as well as the position of Grand-Master of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, of both of which Societies he was a stanch supporter and consistent member. Mr. Wills has left a family of four sons and four daughters, his wife and four other children having departed before him. The
remains of the late Mr. J. N. Wills were interred on Sunday afternoon at the Alberton Cemetery, and in compliance with a wish expressed by the deceased Masonic rites were observed. The funeral cortege on the way to Port Adelaide was joined by a large number of the members of the Victoria and Peninsula Lodges of Oddfellows, M.U., and the Masonic Lodges, Adelaide S.C. and Unity E.C- who preceded the hearse to the Alberton Cemetery. In addition to the mourning coaches several vehicles followed the hearse, making a lengthy procession, and the members of Societies present numbered about 150. There
was a large concourse at the grave, and among those present were noticed the Mayor, the Collector of Customs, and several officers of the establishment, besides many leading residents of the Port. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. P. McLaren, who delivered an impressive address. Mr. H. C. E. Meucke, the W.M. of the Adelaide Lodge, S.C., then read the Masonic address, after which the members passed the grave in single file, casting sprigs of
acacia on the coffin. Mr. N. de Garis, the N.G. of the Victoria Lodge, also read the burial service of that Order.
