Charles W Hammond died February 1873 aged 48 years. Publican of the Great Northern Hotel (The Black Jack Hotel) from 1868-1873. Cause of death Nervous debility, exhaustion from over use of spirit (12 months). After his death his wife Harriet became publican of the hotel.
Martha PHILLIPS nee Smith died February 1st 1857 aged 46 years. Possibly the first burial at Kanyaka Cemetery, Martha died of heart disease. The family came from England and settled in Western Australia until the death of her husband John Randall Phillips in 1852. At that time they moved to stay with her daughter Georgina, wife of William Marchant of Mannanarie, South Australia. In later years her son John Randalll Phillips shared the lease of the Kanyaka Station with Alexander Grant and William Milne. In 1863 John married his partner's daughter Eliza Amelia Milne. It is possible that Martha was visiting, rather than living with, her sons John and Henry at Kanyaka at the time of her death as conditions at Kanyaka were quite primitive compared with those in Adelaide. John died in 1917 six years after his younger brother Henry.
James F WATSON died March 1874 aged 369 years. Watson was the postmaster and kept a general store at Kanyaka until his death. His wife Anges nee Burls then took over the position until 1878.
